About the Senior Volunteer Network
What is SVN?
SVN is an informal network of Christian teachers who are retired or otherwise available, and seeking opportunities of service.
We respond to requests for short-term educational help by providing volunteers whose skills and experience fit the need.
SVN is a Christian agency, but serves people of all faiths and none, and makes no charge for its services.
Who can volunteer?
Any UK resident with valid experience in the field of education, who can be available for a short-term project in their area of expertise.
SVN volunteers cover a broad age range, and the full educational spectrum – foundation stage to degree level, TEFL and Special Needs, plus teacher training. They range from teaching assistants, classroom and head teachers, to inspectors and advisors. Psychologists and therapists who work with children may also find opportunities to share their skills and experience.
What do volunteers do?
Volunteers visit schools or other educational establishments, usually overseas, and share their knowledge and experience. This may involve training teachers, advising management, developing the curriculum or speaking at conferences, so as to support and encourage local teachers in their work.
They have also produced teaching materials and resources, acted as consultants, proof-read and edited publications and given support to overseas students by email.
Whom do they serve?
SVN
volunteers have helped overseas schools, colleges, LEAs, missionary organisations, development agencies and other groups working in education or mission.
They have also worked with bible translators, and helped to train volunteers working with other agencies.
